International day for biological diversity and sustainable development

Today we celebrate the international day for biological diversity, as proclaimed by the UN. The objective of this commemoration is to increase understanding and awareness of the biodiversity issues in today’s world.

This year the theme of the commemoration is Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.

Humanity’s future is tightly related with the variety of life on earth, or biological diversity. It is clear that biodiversity is crucial for human well-being and sustainable development. It is indispensable to reduce poverty because of the vital goods and services that ecosystems provide and allow us to live.

According to the UN, more than 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal diversity for their subsistence, while at the same time over 1.6 billion people rely on forest and non-timber forest resources for their livelihoods. The livelihoods of more than 1 billion people living in dry and sub-humid lands are currently threatened due to the loss in biodiversity and habitat degradation.

These numbers highlight the paramount importance of protecting biodiversity to achieve the goal of poverty reduction and sustainable development.

For the AtEdible team it is clear that in order to reduce poverty, we must have healthy and diverse ecosystems that produce surplus and allow the wholesome existence of human populations. In order to achieve this, the AtEdible project will work with small producers, and help them grow in a sustainable and holistic way.
